Vanessa shot her first short film, Fairytale of the City (starring Sam Worthington) in 2006 in Sydney, and has since made four short films, including one funded by the UK film council (The Fishdance Kid) and the multi-award-winning Pudding Bowl. Following Pudding Bowl’s success, Vanessa won the 4Talent award for ‘Best Young Director in UK 2008’ and soon after got signed by Annex Films.

Along with Music Promo and Commercial work, Vanessa has directed Aphrodite Fry, a pilot for Ruby / Sky written by and starring Sarah Solemani, and was a director on the 2nd series of My Mad Fat Diary for Tiger Aspect / Drama Republic / E4. She also directed Flea, a short film by Cat Jones for BBC, which won the second prize in the TeenScreen Competition at the KUKI + TeenScreen International Short Film Festival for Children and Youth.

Most recently, Vanessa Caswill was the lead director on ‘Thirteen,’ for BBC 3/BBC America written by Marnie Dickens, which was highly commended at the Broadcast Digital Awards, and was nominated for an RTS award for Best Mini-Series in 2017. She has just completed a three-part adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s beloved novel Little Women for Playground / BBC 1 / PBS, adapted by Heidi Thomas which aired at Christmas in 2017 and received rave reviews. Vanessa’s work focuses on strong honest performances with equal emphasis on detailed art direction and beautiful composition.
