Sophie Hexter is an award-winning writer and director. She started her career as a magazine editor, newspaper columnist and fashion stylist, and is a published poet. A deeply sensitive storyteller with a highly stylized aesthetic, Sophie’s path to filmmaking was the alchemical collision of craft, skill and style. Possessing a strong and unique sensibility, Sophie’s debut documentary short, The Battle, screened at over 30 international film festivals, including Oberhausen, Cannes Entré 2 and Aesthetica. Her dramatic short, Hitch, premiered at Santa Barbara Film Festival, and won the Audience Choice Award at Flickerfest, Byron All Shorts.
Her most recent film, Drummer Girl, was nominated for Best Documentary Short at Big Sky Film Festival in Montana. Sophie adapted the Commonwealth Prize Winning novel, The Anatomy of Wings, for screen, and is currently developing two dramatic features, W.SMITH and The Missing. A deeply committed and collaborative filmmaker, Sophie is interested in making thought-provoking films that leave her audience deeply transitioned and inspired. Commercially, she has worked in Australia and abroad, directing short films and TVC’s for various clients, including Chadstone, Dotti and the Melbourne Fashion Festival. A Varuna Fellow, Sophie has a BA (Hons) from Monash University, Melbourne, and an MA (First) from Oxford University, England.
