Sonia Malfa is a Puerto Rican-American filmmaker based in Brooklyn, New York.

After working as an outdoor educator leading wilderness adventures, Sonia discovered her passion for filmmaking. Today, she unites her passion for women, nature, travel and culture in her visual storytelling.

Sonia’s films have screened at the Tribeca Film Festival, LA Shorts Fest, Woodstock Film Festival, Los Angeles Latino Film Festival, Way Out West and One Screen Film Festival. She was featured in SHOOT Magazine’s April 2017 “Up-and-Coming Directors: Assembling the Spring Collection” Story and selected for the inaugural Commercial Directors Diversity Program 2017 by the DGA and AICP. She is a recipient of the New York State Council for the Arts grant for her short, Close Your Eyes, and was invited to the NEA funded MANCC Forward Dialogues Artist Residency. She holds a BA (University of Santa Cruz) and MA (University of Buffalo) in American Studies with a focus on Gender and Race relations and completed a semester of wilderness training with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS).
