Anna Rose Holmer is the 2017 Independent Spirit Award Someone to Watch winner and one of Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film 2015. Her critically acclaimed narrative directorial debut, The Fits (Venice 2015, Sundance 2016), was released with Oscilloscope Laboratories in 2016 and nominated for Breakthrough Director at the 2016 Gotham Awards as well as Best First Feature at the 2017 Independent Spirit Awards. The New York Times called it “a dreamy, beautifully syncopated coming-of- age tale,” while Rolling Stone wrote, “Remember the name Anna Rose Holmer, who makes her feature directing debut with this unique and unforgettable mesmerizer.”
She brings something similarly riveting to other recent work. She directed Natalie Portman in an exquisite music video for James Blake’s “My Willing Heart.” Filmed in high contrast black and white, it features languid sensuous shots of a very pregnant Portman – swimming and lying in bed – at once anticipatory and melancholy about finding and allowing love.
Anna also directed “Moonlight x Alvin Ailey” for the Nowness Just Dance film series, choreographed by Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Artistic Director Robert Battle. It’s an original dance piece that pays homage to Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight. Set to a euphoric score from Nicholas Britell, it features dancers playing out a blue-lit journey in the same spirit of the Academy Award-winning film itself.
She recently produced Jody Lee Lipes’s Ballet 422 (Tribeca 2014) and Mike Plunkett’s Salero (IDFA 2015). And with filmmaker Matt Wolf, Anna co-directed and produced A Ballet in Sneakers: Jerome Robbins and Opus Jazz, a companion documentary to NY Export: Opus Jazz, (SXSW 2010 Emerging Visions Audience Award) which aired on the PBS Great Performances/Dance in America Series.
