Amanda Marsalis evolved into directing from a successful still photography career. In 2014, Amanda helmed the feature Echo Park, starring Mamie Gummer (Meryl Streep’s daughter), which sparked a love of directing in Amanda. After a triumphant festival run, Ava DuVernay’s company ARRAY purchased and distributed the critically acclaimed indie feature.
In 2015, Amanda signed with Backyard for commercial representation. A multi-faceted storyteller, she has helmed spots and branded content for Apple, eBay, AT&T, and Walmart, and has directed dozens of celebrities, including Reese Witherspoon, Sofia Vergara and Chelsea Handler. Amanda brings an independent style that engages youthful audiences and captures her subjects in their most honest moments. She has a well-developed visual language that marries effortlessly with her strength as a narrative storyteller.
Amanda has recently directed two episodes of the drama Queen Sugar for OWN. Executive produced by Ava duVernay and Oprah Winfrey, the show supports powerful female creative voices.
Amanda lives in Los Angeles, CA with her dog Queso.
