Janal Bechthold
A composer specializing in music for film, television and interactive media, Janal has scored over 70 productions including psychological thriller “Art of Obsession”, documentaries “Gods in Shackles”, “The Vatican Deception”, and video game “The Rival Books of Aster”.
Her professional training in Music Therapy brings a unique perspective to her work: “My specific knowledge of psychology and music enables me to recognize the deeper emotional content of a scene and create music which would support the emotions of the actors, the underlying themes, and guide the audience to a greater experience.”
As a composer to watch, Janal recently scored the gender advocacy film “Reel Women Seen”, supported by Canada’s creative industry guilds and unions, honoured with the 2018 Diversity in Cannes Short Film Showcase Jury Choice Award.
Janal received the 2016 Christopher Dedrick Award for Live Musicians in Media Soundtracks and participated in the Canadian Music Centre’s EQ: 2018 Women In Electronic Music incubator. She Chairs the Women Composers Advisory Council and sits on the Board of Directors for the Screen Composers Guild of Canada, and holds membership in Women in Film & Television, The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television, and the Alliance of Women Film Composers.
