Lily Baldwin is a multi-faceted creative who combines her penchant for film and dance to craft intricate narratives.
As a filmmaker, her films are featured on The Criterion Collection on FilmStruck, iTunes, ShortsHD, Filmmaker Magazine, NOWNESS, Vimeo Staff Pick, Short of the Week and Fandor. They have also screened internationally at film festivals, art fairs, galleries and museums.
Lily’s recent VR project ‘Through You’ co-directed with Saschka Unseld, premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. It was also a recipient of the 2016 Sundance Institute New Frontier / Jaunt VR Residency.
Her horror short ‘Swallowed’ (Palm Springs ShortFest, Women of Cinefamily, LAFF), is one of five short films by rising stars comprising the omnibus feature COLLECTIVE: UNCONSCIOUS (SXSW premiere, BAMcinemaFest).
The New York Times reviewed it “an extraordinary and scary short film by Lily Baldwin, whose work has a visceral power similar to Cronenberg’s, but with an anxious female perspective.”
Previous film work includes ‘Sleepover LA’ (SXSW premiere, Berlinale EFM), A Juice Box Afternoon’ (Lincoln Center premiere, Dance on Camera Tour, Detroit Institute of the Arts) and ‘Sea Meadow’ (SXSW premiere, V&A Museum London, Art Basel Miami, Academy-Qualifying theatrical run).
Prior to filmmaking, Lily worked extensively within the contemporary dance field. As a professional dancer, Lily performed with The Metropolitan Opera Ballet, Trisha Brown Dance Company, Faye Driscoll, Netta Yerushalmy, Doug Varone, David Neumann, Noemie La France, and other NYC companies. She performed with David Byrne on his ‘Everything That Happens Will Happen Today’ World Tour choreographed by Annie B. Parson, and in its documentary ‘Ride Rise Roar’ (SXSW premiere).
Lily was named by ShortsHD as one of “The Top 10 Emerging Directors to Watch” and by Independent Magazine as one of the “10 Filmmakers to Watch in 2017.” She has participated in the Screenwriter’s Colony Fellowship and Independent Film Week’s Emerging Storytellers in NYC and was a juror for the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival Storyscapes Competition.
